Swim Clubs and Schools from Bondi to Brunei!

For some time, Australia has been known as ‘The Lucky Country’, and with sunshine almost all year round and some of the most spectacular beaches in the world it isn’t hard to see why. It’s no wonder that one of our favourite past times is swimming. Not only is swimming something that Australians choose to do as a leisure activity, but our nation is also world renown for the supreme athletes produced in the pool.

With swimming so ingrained in our culture, and the amount of sunshine we see day after day, it is no surprise Australia also has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. According to statistics collected by the Australian Cancer Council, around 2,000 Australians die from skin cancer each year and 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. Scary stuff!

So as a nation of outdoor-loving swimmers, what can we do to protect ourselves from the harmful Ultra Violet rays of the sun? We all know about ‘Slip, Slop, Slap, Wrap’, but did you know your choice of swimwear can also help protect you from UV Radiation? When choosing the right swimwear for you or even your swim team, follow these three simple tips to help you get it right -

  • High UV protection factor - ensure your choice of swimwear has a rating of UPF 50+, which is the highest UV sun protection you can get according to ARPANSA (Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency) standards and essential for those who train in outdoor pools.
  • Dense weave fabric - choose swimwear made from synthetic or mixed material as they have a tighter weave than most natural fabrics, which means less light passes through to the skin. Less sunlight on the skin = more protection from the damaging UV rays.
  • Tough against chlorine - swimwear made from Chloroban® fabric (such as the swimsuits made by QRS) last longer in the harsh chemicals of heavily chlorinated swimming pools when worn day after day for training and racing, making them and their sun protective factor last longer.

At QRS, our custom designed and made swimwear has all this covered. Whether you need to coordinate team colours or have your logo added, our swimwear and rash vests can be created to match your club or school colours. We ship our rash vests and co-ordinate swimwear all over the world, from Bondi Surf Lifesaving to a school swim team in Brunei.
